Investigative Exercise 5: Social Networking

Libraries and Social Networking

Libraries are increasingly using social networking to engage and communicate with their clients. Social networking sites commonly used by libraries include Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter.

I think that participation in social networking sites can have great advantages for libraries and their users. However, for this participation to be effective there are a number of important factors to consider:
  • Library members need to feel safe interacting on a library's social networking platforms, without worrying about their privacy.
  • Material needs to be updated frequently in order to maintain interest.
  • Rather than just setting up accounts across all social networking platforms, libraries should think carefully about what they will use the platform for, what kind of material they will post, and what kind of interaction they want to have with library users. This will help in selecting only appropriate platforms to develop.
Above all, using social networking takes commitment.

  1. These are very good points. I agree particularly about updating regularly, and the kind of material posted. When it is used well social media can be great for reinforcing the "brand" or community of a library, but when done badly it is not helpful at all.

  2. Yeah when done badly I think it just gives a bad impression and puts people off.
